We have found out several people have gone to the hospital for unrelated illnesses (colds and the like) and have come away sick with the same zombie-related illness. Which is probably what happened with Adam as well.

That might be likely. At this point, it's clear that this is sabotage of some kind, and while I'm hesitant to jump to any conclusions, an outside source that doesn't come from this world is a possibility...
